Ballet Background

Don't miss out on the magic of Festival Ballet Providence's timeless production of The Nutcracker. With beautiful sets, elegant choreography, and world class dancers, FBP's production is a magical performance perfect for audiences of all ages. It is a classic staging of the familiar tale of Clara and her prince. The Nutcracker ballet is based on the story "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice" by E.T.A. Hoffman. First performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1892, the ballet has since become a holiday tradition throughout the world.

The ballet begins with a grand Christmas party, complete with puppet theater, dancing dolls and a tree that grows 25 feet in height. A Nutcracker doll given to Clara by her Uncle Drosselmeyer sends the young girl into to a midnight battle between life-size toy soldiers and giant mice lead by the Mouse Queen. Clara survives the ordeal, only to find that her protector, a life-sized Nutcracker soldier, has been transformed into a handsome human prince. He leads her through a dozen dancing snowflakes to the luscious Kingdom of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier introduce the couple to brightly costumed dancers from around the world. They celebrate the victory over the Mouse Queen with cultural dances from around the world, culminating in a grand finale.
