Festival Ballet Providence 2003-2004 Season

Providence, RI - Festival Ballet Providence announces 26th season 2003-2004

Mainstage Series:

Studio Repertory Series:

Festival Ballet Providence Artistic Director Mihailo Djuric announces the Company’s expanded 2003-2004 season. It is a varied season that intermixes timeless story ballets with the work of talented emerging choreographers, and showcases the versatility of the company’s dancers.

Mr. Djuric’s artistic vision for expanding the company’s repertoire is clear in adding a series of intimate repertory performances in the company’s Hope Street home to the previous season of 4 main stage productions.

All main stage performances for the 2003-2004 season will take place in Providence’s finest theaters; the 3,100 seat Providence Performing Arts Center, and the 2,200 seat VMA Arts & Cultural Center.

The season opens October 3rd with a thrilling world premiere by one of the most talented young choreographers in the country. Viktor Plotnikov has been commissioned to create this all new production of Carmen for Festival Ballet Providence. Set to Bizet’scompelling score, this full-length Carmen is a contemporary ballet that conveys the passionate story of a free-spirited gypsy beauty through Mr. Plotnikov’s bold approach to dance and his "very distinctive voice". The Boston Herald 4/19/99.

December 12-14, 2003, the Company brings its holiday favorite, The Nutcracker, to the resplendent Providence Performing Arts Center for five memorable performances. Lush sets, bravura dancing and brilliant costumes sparkling with co-sponsor Swarovski crystal stones make this production memorable for the entire family.

Festival Ballet Providence celebrates Valentine’s Day weekend with a special event February 13-15, 2004. Back by popular demand, Firebird is a magical tale of love set to Stravinsky’s dramatic score. This production by FBP artistic director Mihailo Djuric is based on the celebrated production of Demitrije Parlic, and brings to life the Russian legend of a magnificent creature that is part woman, part bird whose magic changes the lives of a dozen princesses, two dozen monsters, a handsome prince and an evil ogre. The program also includes audience favorites, Soledad set to the sultry music of Astor Piazzola, and Extremes, set to Meet The Composer/New Residencies Composer-in-Residence Barbara Kolb’s score for flute and violin.

The season concludes April 23-25, 2004 with one of the most enchanting ballets in the repertoire, The Sleeping Beauty. Based on Perrault’s familiar "Mother Goose Tales", The Sleeping Beauty has become an unsurpassed masterpiece of classical ballet, beloved around the world for it’s wonderful storytelling. Festival Ballet Providence’s company makes this stunning spectacle shine for the entire family. For the months between the company’s main stage productions, FBP inaugurates a new series of studio repertory performances, "Up close, on Hope" giving audiences the opportunity to experience dance in an intimate setting in its purest form. Three separate repertory programs, one each in November, January and March will include works by established and emerging choreographers from around the country such as Viktor Plotnikov (Boston), Festival Ballet Providence’s Mihailo Djuric (Providence), James Brown (Providence), Yves de Bouteiller (Ventura, CA), Gianni DiMarco (Boston), and Colleen Cavanaugh (Providence). Limited to an audience of only one hundred, these performances offer the chance to see thrilling, original dance, to meet the dancers, and to mingle with the choreographers. This series will kick off the eventual refurbishing of the space into a black box theater with lights, curtains and risers. All performances take place on two consecutive Saturdays in Festival Ballet Providence’s Grand Studio, 825 Hope Street on Providence’s East Side.

The season’s sponsors to date include 26th Season sponsor Sovereign Bank, the Providence Journal, season television sponsor NBC10, Swarovski, and GLAD WORKS.
