Toots Zynsky and Beth Bentley on costumes for Orchis

The Orchid form is central to the world-premiere ballet Orchis. Every element of the production, from the lighting to the choreography, has been inspired by photographs of these graceful flowers by A. Cemal Ekin. World-renowned artist and RISD alumna (BFA, 1973) Toots Zynsky has designed the costumes for Orchis, in collaboration with current RISD professor Beth Bentley who is constructing Zynsky’s designs. Zynsky and Bentley have been working together for months creating unique fabrics intended to imitate and capture the texture of the orchids. Creating ballet costumes presents unique challenges as well as many new opportunities for the designers.

Hear the discussion from Zynsky and Bentley in the video below:

FBP Donation Match Challenge

A letter from Artistic Director Mihailo Djuric:

Festival Ballet Providence

Dear FBP Patrons,

Last week we received, for the second time in under two years, a $10,000 donation match challenge from a generous friend of FBP.

With the help of some other generous benefactors, this challenge has been doubled, creating a new total match challenge of $20,000! We have already raised $12,500 toward this goal.

We need only $7,500 to meet this wonderful challenge which will help once again to fund our growing Adaptive Dance Program, our many Educational Programs for Rhode Island’s youth, and our ability to bring to Rhode Island exciting programs and world-premieres like Agon & Orchis which is coming this weekend.

With our very deep thanks for these great votes of confidence for our organization, we ask you to please consider joining this celebration of FBP with a tax deductible gift of any amount within the next 7 days. Remember, your gift will be doubled thanks to this challenge.

Great things are happening at Festival Ballet Providence. There has never been a better time to support the many ways in which Festival Ballet Providence enriches arts and culture in Rhode Island.

To make a donation please visit our website, or contact Shana Santow, Director of Development at 401-432-6064. Thank you for your support.

With gratitude,

Misha

AGON & ORCHIS goes international

With 7 days to go before AGON & ORCHIS, the momentum and excitement in advance of the performance is building across New England and now around the world! A major Turkish daily newspaper, Hurriyet, ran a feature today about Orchis photographer A. Cemal Ekin, a native of Turkey. The headline reads “Orchid Photographs Inspired Ballet.” We are very proud of Cemal and happy that his talent and hard work is being recognized in his home country.
